OUR FAMOUS KAY KIB!

OCEAN TOURS is very passionate about Deep Sea Fishing. It's a love that was born long ago, as the owner's father Chartered Fishing trips in Cancun for many years. Cozumel is one of the best locations for Sportsfishing in the Caribbean, as the many species of Billfish come right down the Channel of Cozumel (the protected waterway between Cozumel and the Yucatan Peninsula) every year during the Billfish run from late February to early September, peaking between April and June. Sailfish, Blue Marlin, White Marlin as well as the tasty Mahi Mahi all make their yearly run right on our front door. Please be advised that OCEAN TOURS has a strict catch and release policy for Billfish, all efforts will be made to ensure that Blue Marlin, White Marlin and Sailfish are returned to the water alive after a few pictures. Cozumel is also in a privileged position as the reef systems around the island, as well as the shallow mangrove bays, provide a perfect breeding ground for Cozumel's year-round fishing species: Black & Yellow Fin Tuna, Grouper, Red Snapper, Barracuda, Wahoo, Rainbow Runners, several species of Shark, and others. So anytime of the year you are here, you have good chances of getting some action, especially aboard OCEAN TOURS' pride & joy KAY KIB. The KAY KIB (Mayan for Sailfish) is Ocean Tours' main fishing vessel, although we own 2 other fishing boats that we use when the Kay Kib is booked. She's a 36' Custom-Built boat, finished and put in the water in May 2002. This boat was hand built by the owner José de la Fuente here in Cozumel, with help from Captain Jorge Pacheco and 1st Mate Ruben. For 6 long months they labored over the design and construction, spending the final month hand-finishing every custom detail. The KAY KIB is a very comfortable, functional and clean vessel, equipped with some of the best tackle made for deep sea fishing: Penn International "Gold Series", plus a large collection of teasers, lures, lines, and even a couple of light tackle reels & rods for when the youngsters come along. It has outriggers and downrigger, a fighting chair plus a couple of stand-up rigs, GPS, fish finder, AM/FM Stereo/CD, VHF Radio + back-up/long range private repeater, restroom and sink w/mirror, polarized & shaded padded sofa seating area, lunch tables, storage area, built-in coolers, refrigerator/freezer, fish tank, fresh water shower, retractable step-up ladder to/from water, and comfortable seating for guests on the top deck with the Captain, for those that just love to see them coming. She is by far one of the newest, and best equipped fishing boats in Cozumel. And to top it all off, the crew of the Kay Kib is one of the most experienced, hardest working and friendliest in the business here. The Captain and 1st Mate grew up fishing these waters, and are not only very experienced and dedicated fishermen, they are also well-spoken, wonderful hosts who will take great care of you in a very professional manner, and work hard the entire Charter to get you into the action. For our fishing trips we will pick you up at your hotel if it has a pier, or at the nearest available pier. If you have your own transportation, you may choose to board the boat at the North Harbor "Puerto de Abrigo".

With a Mexican heart and a Caribbean soul, Cozumel is a paradise where tradition, flavor and joy come together.

Famous all over the world for its coral reefs, there are plenty of water sports such as diving, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, kayaking and more. With its beautiful beaches and exotic locale, Cozumel is an ideal destination where honeymooners can enjoy colorful and breathtaking sunsets, moonlit walks on secluded beaches, swim through crystal clear blue waters and romantic candlelight dinners.

The swim is an in-water start in the sea swim and start and finishes at CHANKANAAB park beach. Water temperature for the month of September in Cozumel is likely to be around 26°C, therefore wetsuits will not be permitted on the one lap rectangular shaped course.

The bike course starts and finishes at the CHANKANAAB park, using the Cozumel island main road. The three loop course is flat, paved in good conditions and with a few sharp corners, and will be totally closed to vehicle traffic. We recommend that you take two water bottles during this segment of the race.

The marathon course is three laps, starting at the CHANKANAAB park towards Cozumel downtown. Just as on the bike, the roads will be closed to vehicle traffic. You will find aid stations every other km with Gatorade, water, ice, PowerBar (bars and gel), Vaseline, Coke and medical assistance.

The "Hanal pixán ", or eaten of the bores, is a tradition of the Mayan town that takes to the end to remember of a special way the friends and relatives who went ahead in the eternal trip. It is a special event for the family of the deceaseds, because they know that, in these days, from the 31 of October to the 2 of November, the bores " receive permission " to visit their relatives.

The first day is dedicated to the children and they call U HANAL PALAL.The second day, 1 of November, it is dedicated to the dead adults and they call U HANAL NUCUCH UINICOOB, and the third day mass is U HANAL PIXANOOB called in some places " pixán " because that day a dedicated mass is applied to the bores, generally in the cemetery of the population.

It is accustomed, mainly in the State, that the children use during those days a ribbon of red or black color in the right wrist,
order that the bores do not take them. Also one gets used to mooring the animals of the

han2.jpg (26083 bytes)house, because they could see the bores and prevent the passage them towards the "altar". The tradition includes several rites, but the main one consists of placing a table that works like "altar", where is placed typical food of the season: papaya, tamales, candy, oranges, mandarins, jícamas, mucbilpollos, new cornflour , all this adorned with photos and flowers.

The offerings for the late children are placed in an altar decorated with a table cloth embroidered in glad tones, toys and food of their preference, like chocolate, tamales, " pibes ", candies, fruits of the season, new cornflour drink and yuca with honey, and it is adorned with flowers of " xpujuc " (of wild type and yellow color), The day of the children will be put, in addition to foods and candies, toys. Second and third days put in table eaten and drinks, as well as brandy and cigarettes if it is that the deads that remember were used to eating certain stews, drinking or smoking. As it will be seen, the main element of this ritual is the foods, whose names are words of Mayan origin.

There is the belief that some days before the ceremony the souls come to wash their clothes and to prepare themselves to receive the tributes, and hope well to be treated by the living beings, who are due to worry about the attention about the offerings about meals, drinks, etc., to which the deceaseds were affection, because of another way they would not return to the world of the alive ones.

COZUMEL REEFS

Paradise Reef
Depth: 20 to 50 feet
Skill level: Novice
This is a popular spot for snorklers as well as night dives and second-tank shallow dives. There are many shallow patch reefs, large brain coral, sea fans and sponges. Also a good chance of finding Cozumel's Splendid Toadfish.

Balones of Chankanaab
Depth: 60 to 70 feet
Skill level: Novice
A series of ballon - shaped coral heads. Colorful, abundant marine life, lobster and crab.

Chankanaab Caves
Depth: 35 feet max
Skill level: Novice
This is an interesting dive at the south end of Chankanaab park. Excellent beach dive that can be reached either from Chankanaab park itself or by entering south of the park towards Corona beach where there is no park entrance fee.Cold fresh water flows out of limestone caves called cenotes. Large Tarpan can be found swimming around in the entrance to the caves. Stay in the ambient light and do not venture far back.Interesting mixing of cold fresh water on the top layer with the warm salt water below.

Tormentos Reef
Depth: 50 to 70 feet
Skill level: Intermediate
Some of the fastest currents can be found here. Many large coral pinnacles covered with brain and whip corals. Eels, angelfish, groupers, grunts and snapper are common as well as smaller reef fish.

Yucab Reef
Depth: 45 to 60 feet
Skill level: Novice
Excellent 2nd dive. Dense reef full of color and marine life including lobster, eels and crab.

Punta Tunich
Depth: 50 to 130 feet
Skill level: Intermediate to Advanced
Often swift current. From a sand bottom at 70 feet, a long ridge of coral rises from the sand dunes between 40 to 60 feet. Big grouper and playful green moaray eels.

San Francisco Reef
Depth: 35 to 50 feet
Skill level: Intemediate
One of the shallowest wall dives. Vey rich with marine life. Excellent 2nd dive.

Santa Maria Reef
Depth: 40 to 60 feet
Skill level: Intermediate
Many large schools of angelfish.

Santa Rosa Wall
Depth: 40 to 130 feet
Skill level: Intermediate
Popular deep dive. Drift dive over huge coral heads that rise up from the deep blue. Impressive overhangs and colorful sponges. At the northern end are a series of swim through tunnels that the divemaster will lead you through. Keep your eye open towards the deep channel where you may spot eagle rays and turtles.

Paso de Cedral
Depth: 35 to 60 feet
Skill level: Intermediate
Popular spot for feeding the locals! Massive black groupers will follow you once you enter the water. Do not feed the fish though. Let the divemasters feed the eels and groupers here as they have more experience. Spectacular cavern, tunnel and swim through diving.

Cedral Wall
Depth: 50 to 90 feet
Skill level: Intermediate
Usually strong current present. Fairly flat but full of color and marine life.

Skill level: Intermediate
Excellent tunnels and caves to swim through. Abundant marine life. Very popular deep dive

Columbia Wall
Depth: 60 to 90 feet
Skill level: Intermediate
One of my favorite dives. Not as many divers come here due to the distance. Huge coral pinnacles and a very impressive drop off. You can often see large marine life such as eagle rays, turtles and large baracuda.

Columbia Shallow
Depth: 35 feet max
Skill level: Novice
This is one of the best shallow dives on the island in my opinion. huge variety of marine life and many coral heads. Usually 2nd dive only for those divers who have just finished the first dive at either Columbia Wall or Punta Sur due to the location.

Punta Sur
Depth: 90 to 130 feet
Skill level: Advanced
This is diving for the experienced at it's best. Home to the famous "Devil's Throat" which starts at the opening of a dark narrow tunnel at 90 feet and takes you out into a sunlite opening at 130 feet on the wall. Eagle rays and sharks are occasionally spoted here. Other spots include the cathedral, which is a large cave opening with giant sponges that form a cross in the ceiling of the cave where light passes through.

Maracaibo Deep
Depth: 90 to 140 feet
Skill level: Expert
This is the southernmost reef on the island and is very exposed to current and topside surf. Wall starts at 90 feet and is covered with large orange elephant ear sponges, black coral and sheet coral. Sharks, rays and loggerhead turtles swim through the channel.

Baracuda Reef
Depth: 80 to 100 feet
Skill level: Expert
Baracuda lies on the north side of the island. This dive site is rarely visited due to rough conditions, even in good weather. The current runs 2 to 3 knots and downcurrents are not uncommon. For the truly adventurous diver, it is a rewarding challenge though and you can often site large schools of fish, turtles, and even hammerhead sharks have been sighted here in the past.

With a Mexican heart and a Caribbean soul, Cozumel is a paradise where tradition, flavor and joy come together. You will always find a friendly face and a warm welcome to make your stay an unforgettable one.

Famous all over the world for its coral reefs, there are plenty of water sports such as diving, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, kayaking and more. Cozumel's mostly undeveloped territory at the center of the island is covered by jungle and swampy lagoons, which are home to tiny mammals and endemic birds that have never left the island. Noteworthy is the Chankanaab National Park, a Cozumel icon, and the Punta Sur Ecological Reserve. This huge protected area at the southern tip of the island includes Punta Celarain and its historical lighthouse, as well as the Colombia Lagoon, a shelter for many of the island's endemic species, as well as other endangered forms of life, such as marine turtles and their nesting areas.
